If you want a mobile mainly to make phone calls or send text messages, then there's little point in paying extra for features such as fast 3G internet access, video cameras and GPS maps that you won't use. Instead, look for a cheap mobile phone.

Basic mobile phones range in price – anywhere from as little as Rs 2500 up to Rs 7000. They're easy to use and have a long battery life. Some basic mobile phones include a low-resolution digital camera and a music player,too.

Most phones now are smartphones. They are the Swiss army knives of technology, letting you browse the web, take photos, find your way using GPS, check emails, listen to music, watch videos – pretty much anything you can think of. And, thanks to 'app stores' where you can download software to add functionality, the possibilities are nearly endless.

If you want a smartphone, but don’t want to break the bank, there are plenty of options. Many cheap, or mid-priced, smartphones have most of the features of the bigger names at a fraction of the price. They might lack the sharpest screens, best cameras and fastest new processors, but they'll do the same things.
